Chardonnay R, 2022
About this wine
Wine Style:
Crafted in a premium Burgundian-style, this Chardonnay focuses on structure and complexity. It shows greater depth and richness than entry-level expressions, with well-integrated oak and a fuller body. The style is balanced and precise, combining minerality and subtle creaminess, with good aging potential.
Tasting Notes:
The wine reveals aromas of ripe apple, pear, citrus, and stone fruit, layered with notes of vanilla, toast, and subtle spice from oak aging. On the palate, it is rich and creamy, with balanced acidity supporting its concentration and depth. After-taste is long, smooth, and complex, with lingering notes of oak, minerality, and ripe fruit.
Gastronomy:
Pairs perfectly with lobster, scallops, and rich seafood dishes. It also complements roasted chicken, veal, creamy sauces, and buttery dishes. Its richness and structure make it ideal for fine dining cuisine and complex, flavor-driven dishes.
Vineyards:
Grapes come from the “grand cru” vineyard Karthäuser and grow on meagre, white shell limestone. Karthäuser wines are distinguished by minerality derived from shell limestone soils. They are particularly fine and silky and taste of pear and grapefruit.
Winemaking process:
The grapes come from a half-hectare plot planted in 1999 in the Karthäuser vineyard at Astheim, on thin white shell limestone. They are crushed by foot, fermented with ambient yeasts in 228- and 500-litre barrels and kept on the gross lees for 16 months. The vineyard is named after the Carthusian monks whose charterhouse stood in Astheim.
Interesting notes:
The wines from Karthauser vineyard distinguished by minerality derived from shell limestone soils. They are particularly fine and silky and taste of pear and grapefruit. After adequate bottle maturation, beautiful brioche and hazelnut notes appear.
Vinoteka's note
A declassified grand cru: Chardonnay is not an approved Grosses Gewächs grape in Franken, so Fürst sells the wine from half a hectare of the Astheimer Karthäuser, planted in 1999 on thin limestone and gravel 250 m above the Main, simply as "R". Ambient yeasts, twelve months in 228- and 500-litre barrels, full malolactic, unfined; the 2022 crop was tiny after a vine virus. Star fruit, quince, lemon curd, honeysuckle and chalk, pure minerality and a saline, oyster-shell finish. Drink or hold for a decade or more; serve at 11–12 °C.
“Dense and defined at first on the nose. Star fruit, quince, lemon curd, lime zest, honeysuckle and chalk.”Falstaff · 96 / 100 · 2022
