Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico Riserva must age at least 24 months before release, including three months in bottle; Squarcialupi is matured in oak. La Castellina stands on the ancient estates of the Squarcialupi family, settled in Chianti since the 13th century, whose palazzo in Castellina has 15th-century cellars.
Vinoteka's note
Sangiovese from vineyards at about 600 m south of Castellina in Chianti, aged 18 months in large casks and barriques in the cellars of the 15th-century Palazzo Squarcialupi. Intense wild berries, black pepper and liquorice; a perfect balance of body and acidity, earthy and intense, with ripe cherry, bramble and forest undergrowth. Built to age through the decade.
“Earthy and intense with ripe sweet cherry, bramble and forest undergrowth.”Decanter, 2020
