Carmenere wines
Carmenère was once widely grown in Bordeaux but almost disappeared there after phylloxera struck in the 19th century. In 1994 it was rediscovered in Chile, where it had long been mistaken for Merlot, and it is now Chile's signature grape. Expect dark berries, red pepper, spice and soft tannins; it goes well with grilled meats, black pepper beef and dishes with roasted peppers.
