Amarula is made from the fruit of the marula tree, which grows wild across sub-Saharan Africa, and was launched as a cream liqueur in 1989. The fruit ripens from late January to March and is harvested by hand, with rural communities around Phalaborwa in Limpopo earning a living from the harvest. As with wine grapes, the fruit is crushed and fermented, then double distilled and matured in small oak casks for two years before being blended with fresh cream. Amarula is sold in more than 100 countries, and the Amarula Trust supports elephant research and community projects.
