Wine Hirsch Grüner Veltliner Kamptal Hirschvergnügen, 2024
About this wine
Vinoteka's note
Hirsch in Kammern has farmed since 1878, was reportedly the first Austrian estate to move its whole production to screwcap in 2002, and co-founded the "Respekt" biodynamic certification in 2006. Hirschvergnügen, a pun on "pure drinking pleasure", is Grüner Veltliner from loess soils, fermented in stainless steel, organic and just 11.5 % alcohol. Pale green-yellow, with citrus zest, green apple and a floral note, light-footed, lemony and mineral-saline with a crisp finish. A summer wine: serve at 8–10 °C with Vietnamese spring rolls, grilled fish or simply on its own.

Winemaking process:
Grüner Veltliner from Hirsch's organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards around Kammern in the Kamptal. It ferments slowly with native yeasts and is raised entirely in stainless steel for about five months. Hirsch was one of the first Austrian estates to bottle its whole range under screwcap, and the deer on the label nods to the family name.
Interesting notes:
“Hirsch” translates to “deer” in German – a fitting name for the estate behind this elegant Kamptal wine. Despite its nimble body, wine impresses with its depth, juicy fruit and white pepper spice. 2024 VINTAGE: THE 2024 VINTAGE 2024 vegetation started very early. Tremendous frost towards the end of April hit the vineyards close to the Kamp River near the foot of the hills worse than ever remembered. After a warm summer we did start to pick very early, interrupted by the heavy rainfalls in the middle of September. Luckily the grapes stayed very healthy, And one of the smallest harvests in years was finished with fantastic results. Falstaff magazine: 93 points.
