France, Sèvre-Maine
Laurent Freuchet makes Muscadet at Domaine de la Tourette in Maisdon-sur-Sèvre, a village in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation south-east of Nantes. According to INAO, the French appellation authority, this appellation was recognised in 1936, covers 23 communes and accounts for about 81% of the claimed Muscadet vineyard area. Muscadet is made only from Melon de Bourgogne, grown near the Atlantic on schist, granite and pebbly sands of the Armorican Massif. The wines are dry, fresh whites with delicate fruity or floral aromas and a touch of salinity.
